The striking Logan consists of a cradle mount that holds the updated world globe on an inlaid pedestal. The 16″ (40 cm) globe ball is a lovely cream color, which the manufacturer calls “antique,” and it this world globe on an inlaid pedestal is encompassed by a calibrated die-cast full meridian. The world globe wears an updated political, topographical, raised-relief map.

The feature that catches the eye immediately about the Logan globe on an inlaid pedestal is the floor stand. Inspired by Italian craftsmen, the wooden floor stand is detailed with hand-rubbed, inlaid wood.

The craft of inlaid woodworking is a noble Italian tradition, particularly in Sorrento where highly skilled artisans have been mastering it for generations. The effect is obtained by cutting, inserting and putting together various colored wood pieces to create a pattern. The resulting design or image is usually flush with the surface.

A raised relief map is made by cartographers who uses shapes and heights of the terrain and landmarks to highlight their contours. Basically, it’s a 3-D depiction of the terrain. Relief maps used to be made as miniature models, but today progressive mapping programs are utilized to represent terrain in 3-D.

Raised relief maps are more advanced versions of topographical maps, which use contour lines to create 2-D models by connecting areas at the same height with contour lines.

What distinguishes raised relief maps from others is that they emphasize 3-D elevation of the topography, and it is usually exaggerated by a factor between five and ten to make it easier to recognize features of the terrain, and shading can be added between the contours for even better visualization.
