The Obelisk Globe by Replogle is actually an adaptation of a vase design that was originally developed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Leerdam Glass Factory in 1929.

In 1922, Wright was commissioned by Royal Leerdam to develop some designs for vases and coffee service for the North American market. Of those designs, only one vase was executed, but Frank Lloyd Wright considered it a failure because the structure was complex and the interior side of the vase did not line up with the exterior. As a matter of fact, it is still not possible to do this using the pressed glass technique to this day.

The globe sphere of the Obelisk floor globe by Replogle is covered by a lovely antique cream-colored, raised-relief topographical map.

And if you’re asking, “What’s an obelisk?” That’s a good question. An obelisk is a tall, four-sided, narrow tapering monument which ends in a pyramid-like shape or pyramidion at the top. They were called tekhenu by their original builders, the Ancient Egyptians.

These tapered monolithic pillars were originally erected in pairs at the entrances of ancient Egyptian temples. The Greeks who saw them used the Greek term obeliskos to describe them, and this word passed into Latin and ultimately English.

Many considered Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) an architectural genius and America’s greatest architect of all time. His visions and designs not only encompassed buildings and large structures, but he delved into the art of landscaping and created designs for furniture, lighting, glass, and floor coverings.
